Our History

A Brief History of Our Club

In 1933 two brothers, Al and Tom Hine from Deer Island decided to form the club to take over the Bantam Lake Protective Association’s annual “Round The Lake Regatta”. As well as to promote sailing and sailboat racing on Bantam Lake.

With the help of Mr. Robert Myer, a Deer Island neighbor who wielded a typewriter, they sent out a letter to each sailboat owner around the lake to see if anyone was interested.

They received many positive responses. So, on August 25th, 1933, the interested sailors gathered for a meeting and the Bantam Lake Yacht Club was formed. A series of 3 races were scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

The finish of the final races brought the first regular meeting of the club. In addition to the ten contestants and their crews, a number of others who became interested after seeing the competition were in attendance. The enthusiasm displayed at the first meeting was truly amazing. Serving as an unmistakable indication of future success and Rapid Progress. At that meeting, a board was appointed, and a mission statement was written and adopted.

The club has continued to hold “Lake Races” every Sunday afternoon, a mid-season Regatta with other visiting clubs and the famed “Round the Lake Race” held on Labor day weekend, on which started it all.
